What is Reiki ?
Reiki is a complimentary holistic healing technique used to relax and balance the nervous system, assisting the body’s natural ability to heal and restore itself on a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level. Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is made of two words. Rei, meaning spiritual wisdom and Ki, meaning vital life force energy. Known as chi, ki, prana, or mana in other world cultures. We receive this energy from many sources including breathing, water, food, sunlight and spiritual practices.
Using hand positions placed lightly on the clothed body, or hovering just above, the practitioner channels the concentrated Reiki energy to the client for a deeply balancing experience. Reiki is a safe, holistic treatment often described by recipients as relaxing and gentle. Reiki is suitable for everyone, including the elderly, young, pregnant women, and animals. It is currently being used in over 900 US hospitals for patients, before and after surgery, to relieve pain, nausea and stress. Reiki does not conflict with any belief system or religion, meaning anyone may receive benefit from it.
History of Reiki
The infinite source of Reiki has always been present in the here and now, ready to be tapped into at any moment. This traditional “laying on of the hands” healing technique has been practiced throughout the history of humankind by many saints and mystics. Reiki was rediscovered in Japan by a lay tendai monk, named Mikao Usui, about one hundred years ago. Many of the Reiki techniques used in the West today come from the Usui tradition, that was passed on to Dr. Hayashi and later brought to Hawaii in 1938 by a woman named Hawayo Takata.
The Reiki Hawaii Connection
Hawayo Takata was born and raised on a sugarcane plantation on Kauai Island, Hawaii as a Japanese-American woman. In 1936, Hawayo was a young widow with many health conditions, caring for two small daughters. She traveled to Japan with her children to see the very same doctor who had cared for her husband when he was ill, Dr. Meada, for surgery. However, at the last minute Hawayo strongly requested ANY other possible treatment and the surgery was postponed. Instead, she spent several months receiving daily hands-on Reiki treatments in the Reiki Clinic in Tokyo owned by Dr. Chujiro Hayashi. Experiencing profound healing, Hawayo requested to be taught Reiki by Dr. Hayashi, a Reiki Practitioner, Naval officer and surgeon who studied Reiki directly with the founder, Mikao Usui Sensei. He reluctantly agreed to teach Hawayo, though only after a referral from Dr. Maeda as it was not customary to teach a western woman at that time, even if she was Japanese. Mrs. Hawayo Takata completed her training in 1938 and returned to Kauai Island to practice and teach Reiki to the Japanese American community, with the blessing and endorsement of Dr. Hayashi. In 1942, after several successful years giving treatments and teaching Reiki Levels 1 & 2 on several of the Hawaiian islands, Mrs. Takata established a permanent clinic on the corner of Kilauea & Puainako Streets in Hilo, Hawaii. She was the only known Reiki Master outside of Japan for 40 years, and though she taught Levels 1 & 2 to many men and women of all ages, she did not train master level practitioners until much later. In those forty years of practice she facilitated healing for many people and ultimately trained 22 Reiki Masters to continue her lineage. From a little island in the Pacific, Reiki has spread all over the Western World, and we have Mrs. Takata to thank for that. Read more about Hawayo Takata here.
